The Impossible Third Pregnancy

“Mother, I think I’m pregnant. Again.”

Sister Esperanza stood inside Mother Caridad’s office with baby Miguel in her arms and little Tomás beside her.

For the third time in three years, a young nun living inside a convent where no man was allowed to enter appeared to be pregnant.

Esperanza insisted she had never broken her vows.

Caridad had believed the first pregnancy was impossible.

The second made her deeply uneasy.

The third terrified her.

Then she found fresh medical tape beside Esperanza’s chair.

Doctor Paloma noticed it immediately when she arrived.

During the examination, Esperanza admitted that before each pregnancy she had experienced strange periods of extreme exhaustion.

The newest pregnancy appeared to be six or seven weeks along.

Seven weeks earlier, Sister Beatriz had treated Esperanza for a sudden “fever.”

Caridad checked the gate records.

Doctor Paloma had supposedly visited that night.

But her name wasn’t there.

The same thing had happened around the previous two conceptions.

Three unexplained illnesses.

Three missing medical visits.

Three pregnancies.

Then an old architectural drawing revealed a forgotten service tunnel beneath Santa Lucía connecting the convent grounds to land now occupied by Doctor Paloma’s clinic.

That night, Caridad followed Beatriz through a hidden entrance behind a cabinet in the sacristy.

Deep beneath the convent she heard Beatriz speaking with a man.

“The transfer succeeded.”

“The third birth completes the sequence.”

“After that, Esperanza is unnecessary.”

Then:

“If she remembers anything, increase the dose.”

By morning, Caridad confronted Esperanza.

But the young nun surprised her.

She had already been investigating.

She had stopped drinking suspicious tea.

Pretended to sleep.

Recorded conversations.

And deliberately dropped the medical tape in Caridad’s office to see whether the Mother Superior would investigate or hide it.

Inside a hollow rosary bead was a memory card.

One recording mentioned three biological descendants, a trust committee, and a genetic marker.

That word became the next clue.
