Caught my sister-in-law in Boise secretly feeding my dog people food every time she visits — now the dog only eats when she’s around and I’m losing my mind

My name is Kevin, I’m 31, and I live in Boise, Idaho with my wife and our golden retriever, Charlie. Charlie is three years old and until recently was the easiest dog in the world when it came to food.

You put his bowl down, he eats it. End of story.

At least… that’s how it used to be.

About two months ago I started noticing something weird. Charlie would suddenly ignore his food bowl. Not just once, but repeatedly. I’d fill his bowl in the morning, and he’d sniff it, look at me, and then walk away like I had personally offended him.

At first I thought maybe he was sick.

We even took him to the vet. The vet ran a basic checkup and said Charlie was perfectly healthy. His weight was normal, his energy was fine, and there were no medical issues.

But the behavior kept getting stranger.

Some days he’d refuse his food completely until late at night. Other days he’d stare at the kitchen like he was waiting for something better to appear.

Then I noticed a pattern.

This only seemed to happen when my sister-in-law, Melissa, came over to visit.

Melissa lives nearby and stops by our house pretty often to see my wife. She’s nice enough, but she’s always been one of those people who treats dogs like tiny humans.

You know the type — baby talk, constant treats, telling the dog he’s “too handsome for normal food.”

At first I didn’t connect the dots.

But one evening last week everything finally made sense.

My wife and Melissa were sitting at the dining table eating dinner while Charlie sat nearby staring at them like dogs do. I was in the kitchen grabbing a drink when I glanced over and saw Melissa quickly drop something under the table.

Charlie snatched it instantly.

I walked over and asked, “What was that?”

She laughed and said, “Oh, just a tiny piece of chicken. He looked hungry.”

That’s when I realized this probably wasn’t the first time.

So the next time she came over, I paid closer attention.

Sure enough, within about ten minutes of sitting down, she slipped him a piece of food again when she thought nobody was looking.

Chicken. Steak. Bread.

Basically whatever was on her plate.

I asked her directly if she had been feeding Charlie table food.

She said, “Well yeah, just little bites. He loves it!”

Apparently she thought it was harmless.

Meanwhile my dog now refuses his perfectly normal dog food unless she’s in the house because he’s apparently holding out for the VIP restaurant experience.

Now every time I put his food down he looks at me like, “Where’s the steak lady?”

I’ve told Melissa to stop feeding him people food, and she says she understands.

But last night I caught her doing it again.

At this point my dog has essentially been trained to expect gourmet samples every time she visits.

And I’m the bad guy serving the boring dog kibble.

I swear my own dog is now boycotting meals in protest.
