The Divorce
The clock on the wall showed 10:16 a.m. when I signed the final page of my divorce agreement.
For eleven years, I had been Lena Hartwell Hale.
At 10:17, I became Lena Hartwell again.
I had expected the moment to hurt more.
Instead, I felt strangely calm.

Across the conference table, Preston Hale barely looked at me.
He signed.
Pushed the papers toward the mediator.
Then immediately reached for his phone.
“It’s done,” he said. “I’m leaving now. Your appointment is still at eleven, right?”
I already knew who was on the other end.
Brielle Foster.
The woman he had insisted was “just a friend.”
He smiled.
“Tell our little man his father is on the way.”
Then he ended the call and looked toward me.
“You heard that, Lena. Brielle’s expecting a boy. My parents are thrilled.”
His smile widened.
“At least something good came out of this mess.”
I looked down at the papers.
There was nothing left to argue about.
Then Preston leaned back as though he had just completed a business transaction.
“The downtown condo stays with me,” he said. “So does the Range Rover.”
“Yes.”
He seemed almost disappointed by how easily I agreed.
“And since you wanted primary custody, you can handle the girls. I’ll see them when my schedule allows.”
The mediator shifted uncomfortably.
“They’re your daughters, Preston,” I said. “Not appointments you fit between meetings.”
He shrugged.
“I’m starting over. Brielle and I have a baby coming. Things are complicated.”
Marcy stood near the door.
“Maybe this is better for everyone,” she said. “Preston finally gets the family life he always wanted.”
I looked directly at her.
“He already had a family.”
Silence.
Preston rolled his eyes.
“There you go again.”
I stood.
Removed the condo keys.
Placed them on the table.
“Keep them.”
Preston looked satisfied.
Then I added:
“Just remember something. Possession and ownership are not always the same thing.”
His smile faded.
“What is that supposed to mean?”
I didn’t explain.
Five minutes later, I walked outside.
