Digital blackout ‘devastating for Iranians’, warns internet monitor

Isik Mater, director of research at NetBlocks, a global internet connectivity monitor, has said the Iranian government has “perfected their digital kill-switch” in the country, where internet services have been down since Thursday.

Mater said this has resulted in “faster and more totalitarian deployment as compared to the 2019 protests”.

“This will equate directly to the loss of transparency and the loss of lives,” Mater warned, arguing that the “blackout is devastating for Iranians, friends, family and loved ones.”

As we’ve reported, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said earlier today that internet services in the country will be restored in coordination with security authorities.

Iran’s judiciary head calls for decisive measures after officers killed in protests

The head of Iran’s judiciary, Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje’i, has called for “decisive and effective measures” for the security forces and police officers killed during the protests in comments made on state radio.

As we’ve reported, Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency said on Sunday more than 100 security officers have been killed in the protests.

Mohseni-Ejei said those who attacked the officers or security force facilities and urban infrastructure must be brought to justice as a priority, adding the “riots” in Iran are being incited externally.

Efforts “should be taken in retribution for the martyrs and victims of the recent unrest”, said Mohseni-Ejei.
