A client project went out with incorrect data. Not a typo—numbers that could actually affect decisions. Melissa had prepared the final report. I reviewed a different section earlier in the process, but I didn’t touch the final version. Still, when the client noticed the error, management panicked. By the next morning, our manager pulled me aside. He said, “We need someone to take ownership of fixing this.” Not who caused it. Just who would carry it. Melissa was already in meetings, “very stressed,” according to him. I was asked to redo the report, draft an explanation for the client, and stay late to make sure it never happened again. I asked if Melissa was involved.
He hesitated, then said, “Let’s not point fingers. We’re a team.” By the end of the day, the mistake had quietly become my project. My name was on the follow-up email. My apology went to the client. My weekend disappeared into revisions. Melissa thanked me casually the next week. “I owe you one,” she said, smiling. Management praised my “initiative” in a team meeting. No one mentioned how the situation started. Then it happened again. Smaller issue. Same pattern.
