Landlord in Cleveland keeps entering my apartment to “check the smoke detectors” without 24-hour notice — caught him napping on my couch last Tuesday

My name is Brian, I’m 31, and I rent a one-bedroom apartment in Cleveland, Ohio. The building itself is older but generally decent, and until recently I didn’t have many issues with my landlord.

That changed about two months ago when he started showing up unannounced.

The first time it happened, I came home from work and noticed my kitchen light was on. I was pretty sure I had turned it off before leaving that morning.

At first I thought maybe I had just forgotten.

Then I saw a small sticky note on the counter that said:

“Checked smoke detectors. All good.”

Apparently my landlord had entered the apartment during the day.

Now I understand that landlords sometimes need to enter units for maintenance or inspections. But usually they’re supposed to give at least 24 hours’ notice, or at least send a message ahead of time.

This time there was no text, no email, nothing.

I figured maybe it was just a one-time thing.

But then it happened again.

About a week later I came home and noticed my bathroom window had been opened slightly. Sitting on the counter was another note:

“Testing detectors again.”

At that point I started getting uncomfortable. Why would smoke detectors need to be tested multiple times in such a short period?

So I texted my landlord and asked if he could give me a heads-up before entering the apartment.

He replied with something vague about “routine safety checks.”

Things got quiet for about two weeks after that.

Then last Tuesday happened.

I had left work early because a meeting got canceled, so I got home around 2:30 in the afternoon — much earlier than usual.

When I unlocked the door and walked inside, I immediately noticed something strange.

My living room was quiet… except for the sound of someone snoring.

I walked a few steps further and there, stretched out on my couch, was my landlord.

Sleeping.

Shoes off, head tilted back, fully comfortable like he was in his own living room.

For a moment I honestly thought I had walked into the wrong apartment.

Then he woke up.

He looked confused for a second, then said, “Oh! Hey. I was just… checking the smoke detectors.”

Apparently his version of a safety inspection included lying down for a quick afternoon nap.

I asked why he was inside my apartment without notice again, and he said something about needing access to the hallway alarm wiring.

Which doesn’t really explain the couch situation.

Since then I’ve started locking my bedroom door when I leave and considering installing a small camera just to keep track of what’s happening when I’m gone.

Because if my landlord is comfortable enough to nap on my couch during a “smoke detector check,” I’m honestly afraid to find out what other maintenance procedures he might be performing while I’m at work.
