The Locked Room
I moved immediately.
An officer followed with his body camera running.
At the end of the upstairs hallway was the same type of latch Ava had photographed.
Locked from the outside.
The officer documented it.
Then opened the door.
Tommy was inside.
Curled beneath a blanket.
Still wearing pajama pants despite a wedding taking place downstairs.
He looked weak and disoriented.
When his eyes opened, he whispered Ava’s name.
Paramedics were called.
Tommy said his stomach hurt.
His head felt strange.
Then he said Wade had given him medicine because he wouldn’t stop crying.
At the hospital, doctors documented dehydration, bruising, older injuries, and traces of a sedating medication that had not been prescribed to him.
Some marks suggested the confinement had not been a one-time event.
A forensic pediatrician documented everything.
Then Ava finally told me what had happened.
Before the ceremony, she heard Tommy crying upstairs.
She found Wade locking the hidden room.
Ava demanded he open the door.
Wade told her Tommy needed isolation because he had embarrassed the family.
When she threatened to call me, Wade took her phone and shoved her.
She fought to get the phone back.
Then ran.
Wade chased her toward the landing.
He told her nobody believed her anymore.
Then reached for her again.
Ava grabbed the nearest heavy object.
A brass candleholder.
She struck him once.
Wade fell backward and lost consciousness.
Ava dropped the candleholder immediately.
Then ran toward Tommy’s locked door.
That mattered.
She hadn’t been searching for Wade.
She had been trying to reach Tommy.
