What the Hallway Video Showed
Prosecutors still had to examine Ava’s use of force carefully.
She was twelve.
Wade had been seriously injured.
The evidence had to show what happened.
Then investigators found video from the upstairs hallway.
It showed Wade following Ava.
Grabbing at her clothing.
Reaching toward her.
It showed Ava striking him once.
Then dropping the candleholder immediately.
And instead of continuing to attack him, she ran straight toward Tommy’s locked door and tried to open it.
That changed the entire narrative.
The video didn’t show a child looking for someone to hurt.
It showed a frightened girl trying to escape an adult and reach another child.
No delinquency petition was ultimately pursued against Ava after authorities concluded the evidence supported her account of protecting herself and Tommy.
Wade faced charges related to abuse, unlawful confinement, assault, and administering medication without legitimate medical justification.
His father faced a separate investigation involving concealment, false statements, and assistance with the confinement arrangement.
Patricia cooperated after investigators obtained the old juvenile records.
But cooperation didn’t erase years of silence.
Diane filed to end the marriage almost immediately.
Then she entered counseling.
She finally admitted something difficult.
Wade had convinced her that Ava was manipulative whenever the girl questioned his treatment of Tommy.
Diane accepted that explanation because believing Ava would have forced her to confront the man she had chosen to marry.
That honesty mattered.
But Ava still refused immediate reconciliation.
And I supported her.
Apologies cannot demand trust back on schedule.
