The $155,000 Phone Call

I was halfway through an important corporate meeting when my phone began vibrating.

The caller ID showed Travis.

Normally, I ignored personal calls during work.

Something made me answer.

“Mom is in the emergency room, Shannon,” he shouted. “She needs $155,000 for bypass surgery right now. If you don’t wire it within two hours, she might not make it.”

Everything else disappeared.

I was thirty years old and had spent much of my adult life acting as my family’s financial safety net.

Unexpected bills.

Travis’s failed investments.

Debts.

Emergencies.

I handled them.

But this wasn’t another overdue account.

This was Mom.

Martha.

I left my files behind and drove through heavy rain to Seattle General Hospital.

My mind raced through everything I could liquidate quickly.

Savings.

Emergency funds.

Investments.

Whatever it took.

When I found Room 412, my hand reached for the door.

Someone grabbed my wrist.

“Don’t go in.”

A nurse pulled me into a nearby supply closet.

Her name was Sheila.

“If you want to protect your savings,” she whispered, “don’t make a sound.”

Then she pointed toward a narrow crack beside the door.

“Watch.”

I looked.

Mom was sitting comfortably upright.

No monitor.

No IV.

No visible emergency.

Travis stood beside her using his phone.

A man in a white coat stood nearby.

Dr. Thorne.

They weren’t discussing surgery.

They were discussing me.

“So she’ll transfer everything?” Travis asked.

Dr. Thorne answered that once I believed Mom’s life was at risk, I wouldn’t take time to verify details.

Then Travis mentioned documents I would need to sign.

My fear began turning into disbelief.

They had not called me to save my mother.

They had called me because they expected me to pay.
