Mom Wanted Her Cut
Dr. Thorne shifted nervously.
He understood exactly how dangerous the plan was.
He talked about false cardiac information.
Hospital protocols.
His medical license.
Possible criminal consequences.
Travis seemed completely unconcerned.
“My sister always pays,” he said.
He described me as someone trained to solve the family’s problems.
He expected that if someone placed paperwork in front of me while I was frightened, I would sign without reading carefully.
Then Mom spoke.
“Keep my cut separate.”
Dr. Thorne looked toward her.
Martha continued calmly.
She wanted $30,000 deposited into her own account for participating.
That changed everything.
Until then, part of me had hoped Travis was manipulating her.
He wasn’t.
She knew.
She was cooperating.
I stood alone in that dark closet thinking about all the years I had worked to help them.
The canceled plans.
The long hours.
The financial emergencies I had solved.
I had believed I was helping my family.
They had apparently learned something else.
That Shannon paid.
Always.
I knew confronting them immediately would accomplish nothing.
Dr. Thorne could call the conversation a misunderstanding.
Travis could deny it.
Mom could pretend she was confused.
So I took out my phone.
Dimmed the display.
Opened a recording application.
And started capturing the conversation.
They believed they were planning against a frightened daughter.
They had forgotten she was also an attorney.
